The future of orthopaedics lies in its subspecialties. These areas of expertise should be a major focus for SICOT and a domain in which the organisation strives to excel. SICOT subspecialties must be represented by leading international experts—this is the vision of SICOT’s future.
The Board of Subspecialties (BOSS) represents all subspecialties and embodies the highest standards of SICOT’s specialty education and training. It guides young orthopaedic surgeons as they explore subspecialty pathways, while also recognising the importance of maintaining a strong foundation in general orthopaedics. SICOT subspecialties are global in scope, not regional, and all subspecialty committees fall under BOSS. These committees report to the President Elect, who serves as the head of BOSS. In this role, BOSS collaborates closely with all SICOT academies and councils.
Advantages of uniting all subspecialties include:
- Coordinated development of specialty curricula
- Educational initiatives aligned in purpose and direction
- Creation of training programmes, fellowships, courses, and discussion groups
- Organisation of specialty meetings and conferences around the world
- Strengthening advanced training and certification in the subspecialties
BOSS, under the leadership of the SICOT President Elect, is responsible for:
- Coordinating all subspecialties
- Developing subspecialty curricula
- Overseeing subspecialty educational programmes, courses, cadaveric training, and discussion groups
- Organising subspecialty meetings and conferences
- Managing training programmes and fellowships
- Certification processes
- Developing subspecialty content for the SICOT Diploma Exam and any advanced specialty examinations
- Establishing higher-level subspecialty exams to recognise training, assess knowledge, and certify expertise in each subspecialty
